What is Hereford, TX known for?

Hereford, Texas is known as “The Beef Capital of the World”. There are many reasons for this - billions of reasons! 

But, did you know that before being known for its world-renowned cattle industry, Hereford was once known as “The Windmill City”? This is due to its many windmills supplying fresh water from the Ogallala Aquifer.

Hereford, Texas is located in the Texas Panhandle approximately 48 miles southwest of Amarillo, Texas. Hereford is first and foremost an agricultural community. Deaf Smith County is annually at the top of the list in agricultural receipts for Texas. 

Hereford, Texas is known as “The Beef Capital of the World”.

But, the “The Windmill City” is much more than just a cattle capital. Over 400 windmills used to spin in the area. Observers who traveled by train could see them from miles away. 

Another interesting thing about Hereford is it has been known as “The town without a toothache”. In the early 1950’s, Dr. George W. Heard wrote a book entitled “Man vs Toothache” in which he called Hereford, “The town without a toothache” due to the naturally occurring fluoride in our ground water. 

Hereford may soon be known as “The Sorghum Capital of the World”. Over 80% of the world’s sorghum originated in Deaf Smith County. But what Hereford is most known for at this time is beef.

Hereford feeds more than 1 million head of cattle annually within its nearby feed yards. That equates to over 1 billion pounds of beef produced, and over 1 billion dollars in cattle sales every year.

 

Hereford helps to produce enough beef every year to feed 65 million people (based on worldwide average consumption). Want some cheese on that burger? 

We‘ve got that too! Hereford isn’t just home to beef cattle. Dairies in the Hereford area produce over 1 billion pounds of milk annually.

The Hereford area produces over a billion pounds of grain annually. Hereford grain is used to produce bread, tortillas, chips, livestock feed, and even whiskey. Speaking of alcohol, Hereford is home to two ethanol plants.

We have the capacity to produce 200 million gallons of biofuel annually. Let’s not forget “man’s best friend”! Hereford is home to the production and distribution one of the most prestigious lines of pet food in the country.
